On Friday May 31 took place the IX Forum on Mathematics-Industry  in the School of Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Vigo. This IX Forum, sequel of the traditional Applied Mathematics-Industry Forums is put forward by the research groups in Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research of the 3 Galician universities, groups which are consolidating their mathematical work on technology transfer to industry and the productive sector through the newly created ITMATIForo matematica industria.

The opening of the IX Forum was attended by the vice-chancellors of the Galician universities , Mr. José Antonio Vilán Vilán , Vice Chancellor for Knowledge Transfer at the University of Vigo , who chaired the opening session ; Mr. Francisco González García , Vice-President  of ITMATI  and Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of Santiago de Compostela, and Mr Ricardo Cao Abad , Vice-President of ITMATI and Vice-Chancellor for Research and Transfer at  the University of Coruña, and the directors of the three Schools of Engineering at the University of Vigo. After opening ceremony Peregrina Quintela Estévez presented the Technological Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI ) and the Spanish Network for Mathematics and Industry (Math- in). Peregrina Quintela is ITMATI's Director and the President of Math-in. She highlighted the features of these two new transfer structures which aim to bring the most advanced mathematical technology to industry and contribute decisively to add value in many sectors of economic activity. In her presentation, the Director of ITMATI emphasised on the new call for researchers to be members  of ITMATI which will open in June and in which faculty members  from the three Galician universities can participate.

Then the invited companies  formulated problems from their fields which are likely to be treated by mathematical, numerical, statistical and operations research methods. Among others, issues related to mathematical models in the development of telecommunications equipment, simulation processes of cutting materials, statistics and data analysis in medicine and optimization for geostrategic position in the energy supply chain were presented.

This IX Forum was funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (FECYT), under the project "Mathematics as an Innovative Element for Innovation in Industry". The event was broadcast live from UVigo-TV at the following link: http://tv.uvigo.es/ and it was followed by multiple live @ ITMATI followers on twitter.
