The 1st edition took place in Oxford in 1968. The European Study Group with Industry (ESGI) provides a collaborative workspace for industrial scientists and mathematical researchers on problems of interest to industry. This is an internationally recognized method for technology and knowledge transfer between academia and industry.
This is the 1st ESGI conducted in Galicia, and was held at the University of Santiago de Compostela with the collaboration of the Technological Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI, public consortium of the three Galician universities), and the Spanish Network for Mathematics and Industry (math-in). This edition received funding from a project with the Norwegian government in which ITMATI collaborates with other prestigious European institutions such as the Norwegian Institute of Technology Teknova, the "Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics" (OCIAM), the "Norwegian University of Science and Technology" and "University of Agder Campus Grimstad" as well as with companies Elkem, Eramet Norway, Alcoa norway and Saint Gobain Ceramic Materials. The project was co-funded by ERDF and Xunta de Galicia in the framework of the reference help GRC2013-014.During the first session of ESGI researchers dealt with issues raised by the invited companies, Teknova, Alcoa and Elkem CENER . In this edition the problems dealt with combustion, thermoelectric, and renewable energy and resource management fields:
All these problems can be treated using mathematical, statistical and numerical methods. During these sessions researchers worked together with the participating companies to find a solution to the problems.
